PA Students Encourage Peers to Vote
Sujatha Jahagirdar Program Director, Student PIRGs New Voters ProjectIn the weeks leading up to the Pennsylvania primary, student leaders with PennPIRG (Pennsylvania Public Interest Research Group) are working feverishly to ensure high turnout numbers on Philadelphia-area campuses.
To continue the youth vote momentum seen in the first presidential contests of the year, on April 22, students will organize phone banks, dorm storms, shuttles to the polls, and other campus visibility events to build Election Day buzz on campus. At Temple University, student leaders dressed in "Vote" T-shirts will stop students in the Student Center, urge them to sign a pledge to vote, then text their friends a "get out the vote" reminder. In the days leading up to the election students will also organize "bring your own phone" banks to urge their peers to the polls.
On Election Day, these efforts will culminate in shuttles from campus dorms to the polls. Students on all campuses will also organize Election Night parties to watch results, debate their meanings, and root for their candidate of choice.
